![]() I have a 1997 F-250 Heavy Duty 7.3 Powerstroke and it's a great hauler, but it stops there. I only say all this based on my experience with diesel engines. You'd be better off supercharging your 2.7 if more power is what you're after for a fraction of the cost. Diesel fuel itself is still about 40 cents more per gallon (around here) than gas and so realistically, you probably won't save that much on fuel, even though the 4BT sips fuel compared to V8 and even inline 6 Cummins diesels. The frame and chassis isn't designed to carry more than that safely. Not trying to be a downer, but why the heck would you want an engine with this much capability in a vehicle that won't even come close to maximizing the mill's potential? Just to be cool? Fuel mileage? Blow black smoke? What? Your tow and haul ratings won't increase with it at all, your Tacoma is still rated at like 980# carrying capacity and 3500# tow rating. Making the change to the 3.9L 4BT I would lose 45Hp & gain 135Tq.Ī guy with a 4BT ranger ran a 8.27 at the strip.A lot of money and patience! And I mean, A LOT of those things. I have a 3.9L V6 Magnum stock rated at 175Hp & 220Tq & getting about 17 mpg. The 6BT is the cominly found inline 6 cylinder 5.9L & the late 6.7L. The 4BT engines have the same pistons, connecting rods, valve train components, and injectors as their 6BT counterparts. Many have reported getting as much as 25-35 mpg. The 4BT today is also popular as a conversion engine among many light-duty pickup trucks that were originally equipped with gasoline engines. The 3.9L is about 750Ib wet, & had 130Hp, & 355Tq.īoth engines are cominly found in many step van applications such as frito lay, & bread trucks. I wanted too know If anybody out there has done a engine swap with a cummins 3.9L inline 4BT diesel engine!? If so what mods were done to to make it work, & fit into the dakota?įor those who want to know about this engine here are some facts.Ĭummins came out with a 3.3L, & 3.9L Inline 4 cylinder diesels both B series motors, & called them the 4BT, & 4BTA. ![]()
